Featured Article: "Is your Landscape Company 'Green'?"
JCMS Landscaping is committed to doing its part to help the environment. This will be the first in a series of tips and ideas to bring awareness and action into our lives.

Being Green is not just limited to hybrids and recycling; being environmentally responsible means living a life of sustainability and integrity with the Earth. This means we all have to look at every aspect of our lives and take inventory on what we can change. This series will focus on aspects related to landscaping but the principles can be applied everywhere.

Issue #1 Water Conservation:
The fact is, California is in a drought and water restrictions are promised in the near future. Water prices will be the next headline after we get used to paying a premium at the pump. July has been named "Smart Irrigation Month" by the Irrigation Association, so this issue will focus on water conservation methods and techniques. It is estimated that 70% of residential water use is in the landscape, reducing your water use saves money and resources required to pump, store, treat and deliver water to your landscape. There is more to this issue than just water conservation. There is the energy required to get the water to the client, the effect of dams and pipelines on the environment and wildlife and the transfer of water resources from one region to another.

1. The Controller
There are many ways to conserve water in the landscape and it all starts with the sprinkler controller, also known as the 'clock' or 'timer'. There have been incredible advances in controller technology and new generations of 'Smart' Controllers are currently taking over the market. The 'Smart' Controller has features built in that help save water by giving plants the right amount of water all through the year. Most controllers are programmed to water the same amount throughout the year, causing over-watering in the winter and under-watering in the summer. This not only wastes water, but can be detrimental to plant health. A 'Smart' Controller relies on weather data, site conditions, sprinkler type and plant type to generate watering schedules on a daily basis.

There are Federal, State and Local agency incentives set up to provide rebates and grants to residential, commercial and public customers who purchase 'Smart' Controllers.

Information on these programs can be found at:
www.20gallonchallenge.com and www.bewaterwise.com

JCMS Landscaping has trained technicians to help with the selection, purchase and installation of these controllers, give us a call for a free evaluation.

2. The Irrigation System
An efficient and well functioning irrigation system is critical to water conservation. Broken sprinklers, incorrect nozzles, poor coverage and old parts waste water every time the irrigation system comes on. The first step is to make sure the current system is functioning at its best. Many systems are old and dated irrigation technologies, considering changing your system to a low-volume drip system or using rotator nozzles is the next step. There are rebate programs for these applications as well in the links above. JCMS Landscaping can evaluate and recommend what options will best fit your landscape.

3. The Landscape
You can have a beautiful landscape and not use a lot of water. Historically a low-water or xeri-scape has a bad reputation as an ugly cactus garden. With a little creativity and vision, you can have a lush and beautiful garden and use half as much water. Using plant material and groundcovers that do not require as much water is important in our climate, for plant ideas, go to www.bewaterwise.com/Gardensoft/browser01.aspx and browse all the options available. Your typical lawn and Southern California tropical landscape uses a lot more water than a landscape using drought-tolerant natives, Mediterranean plants or a whole range of plants from Africa and Australia. JCMS Landscaping has many examples of drought-tolerant landscapes, give us a call or visit our portfolio on-line.
